By the late 80s, the 8-bit computer boom set off by the Apple II was winding to a close, but not before Brian Fargo could prove that there was still some untapped potential in those archaic chips. Fresh off the success of A Bard’s Tale, Fargo hired up a team of pen and paper roleplaying game designers to write and build Wasteland, which takes its title and a fair amount of inspiration from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Dropping you into the Nevada desert 100 years after a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union, Wasteland’s setting will seem familiar for anyone who has played Wasteland’s spiritual successor, the Fallout series. But is Wasteland still worth revisiting? And what can we learn about the evolution of the RPG from examining its systems and world building? Join us this week on Gameography as we journey out into the Wasteland.
